A Grace Disguised: How We Can Grow Through Loss

Join us on October 16 at 9:55 am as our Adult Sunday School classes meet together in Stone Fellowship Hall to hear from author Jerry Sittser on the subject of his book, A Grace Disguised, How the Soul Grows Through Loss, with time at the end for discussion. This will be in place of our regular Adult Sunday School classes for the day.

Sometimes loss crashes in on us, often when we least expect it.  At other times it simmers in our lives for years.  In both cases, significant loss never leaves us the same. How can we learn to carry it over the long haul, without having it ruin our lives any more than it already has?  In this seminar we will look at:
  • what it means to carry loss in a way that does not debilitate us
  • how we can learn to mourn for ourselves and for others
  • what it means to live in a tension between joy and sorrow
  • how we can become a caring community
  • what it means to choose life when it seems almost impossible

Loss came suddenly for Jerry Sittser. In an instant, a tragic car accident claimed three generations of his family: his mother, his wife, and his young daughter. While most of us will not experience such a catastrophic loss in our lifetime, all of us will taste it. And we can, if we choose, know the grace that transforms it. In his book, A Grace Disguised, How the Soul Grows Through Loss, he walks through his own grief and loss, with vulnerability and honesty, to show that new life is possible–one marked by spiritual depth, joy, compassion, and a deeper appreciation of simple blessings.
