Dinner, Drama, Discussion: a C.S. Lewis Book Event

6:00 pm dinner, 6:30 pm program, Wednesday, March 29

Wednesdays evenings during the season of Lent, March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29
In Stone Fellowship Hall & online

Lent, in the Christian understanding, is a season of forty days before Easter (not counting Sundays), when we give particular focus to the events leading up to the pivotal moments of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. Christians observe this time by asking, “How can I live more faithfully in response to this sacrificial love we have met in Christ?”

Please join us this Lent as we delve into C.S. Lewis’s classic The Great Divorce, his imaginative exploration of possible responses to Christ’s invitation to follow him. We’ll gather at National Presbyterian Church on Wednesday evenings during the season of Lent, March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. Here’s the plan:

  • At 6:00 pm, a simple supper will be served in Stone Fellowship Hall. Please use the blue button below to pre-register for dinner so we can prepare enough food.
  • At 6:30 pm, we will enjoy a “readers’ theater” presentation of a vignette from Lewis’s work, (in which actors read from a script). We think you might be surprised to meet characters who feel a little too familiar! Along the way we will have time to reflect on Lewis’ characters as they are given opportunity to see themselves more clearly, in light of the invitation to a more profound spiritual growth.
  • Afterwards we’ll have a large group conversation led by Transitional Pastor Allan Poole. This will be followed by an opportunity to share insights and reflect on the themes of the book and its relevance to our lives today.

Don’t miss this chance to deepen your faith and connect with others during the holy season of Lent. We hope to see you there.

Reading Schedule:
March 1: Introduction to The Great Divorce by Rev. Allan Poole, plus a preview of the readers theater with the “Hard-Bitten Ghost’ from Chapter 7
March 8: Ch. 8, the would-be-well-dressed Ghost and her solid Spirit friend
March 15: Ch. 11, Ghost Pam, Michael’s mom, & her brother Reginald, a Spirit
March 22: Ch. 11, Ghost with the red lizard and bright Spirit friend
March 29: Ch. 12-13, Ghostly Frank and his tragedian and his wife Sarah, a saintly Spirit
