In the Age of Artificial Intelligence, Can Morality Be Coded?
Margaret Kibben
Consideration of artificial intelligence often includes job replacement concerns, and the ability for humans to have the upper hand over machines. But an even more fundamental question of value must be asked: can morality be coded? When using AI for combat operations, where decisions are made by algorithms determined by facts and patterns, is there room for the moral implications of an action on the preservation of virtues like love, hope, and kindness? Dr. Margaret Kibben is recently retired after 33 years in the military.
